There is a very heated debate in many states and homes about weather homeschooling is more beneficial then public school. Personally I home school all 3 of my munchkins and I feel like since I’ve been homeschooling them they learn easier and in a more fun environment. I actually started homeschooling my 3 children when they were 4, 3 and 1 years old. We started out simple learning the ABC’s and counting numbers. By the time my daughter turned 2 years old she could count to 20! my 4 year old could count to 40 easy as well.
The Reason Why I home school:
First off I home-school because I have the time and accessibility to the tools I need to home-school my children, I may not have a fancy desk and chairs, but I do have a kitchen table and chairs that work just as good. (not to mention they are padded! what school chairs do you know of that are padded?) When my son was in his early years around 2 years old we found out that he had a learning disability just like I did when I was young. We knew that we needed to work with him very closely with each activity he engaged in. I had the option to send him to a special needs school where he would have been around other children his age but I felt he would prosper better if he was at home with his family. So then begun my home-school adventure. I bought work books, arts and crafts projects, poster boards, and also did some plant growing with him. After spending about a year with him and his work books I found him to not be interested in the structure of the work sheets. So I did some research and came across an AWESOME teaching method! This method is called UNSCHOOLING, now! Do not be alarmed it is not a literal term and does not describe him not learning, in fact it is a method that many moms are starting to use with their children. This method basically lets the child engage in activities they like instead of you giving them curriculum and guidelines. This new method has sparked something special in my son and he has greatly changed for the better with this, hes actually excited each day to do something and asks me to do work type activities. One of his favorite things to do is build, my oldest is an architect and has been since he was born, I would sit with him and we would take blocks and count them together as he built his structures and made towns and cities. Another thing he liked to do is draw, he could sit down for hours and draw what any little boy would love to draw, monsters and characters he saw off of TV. Since he loved to draw we would sit and draw pictures and then spell out the names of what he was drawing and even putting the names of the characters he loved. He learned how to spell AND improved his penmen-ship for drawing and writing.
My youngest son and daughter were not so challenged as my oldest son is in these areas of learning, I could give them a work sheet and they would be done with it so long as they weren’t bored. Although they could complete the tasks given to them, I never saw them happy while they did it. They would be excited for one minute then realize they had so much work ahead of them that they just got disinterested. I approached their learning method with the same as my son and since then I have 3 happy campers! Not only can they speak and talk well now, but they are already learning my home countries language Tagalog! Its so much fun and rewarding to be able to teach them day to day and know that I can give them what they need.
Don’t fret now moms! I’m not done yet, Not only do they learn in a fun environment but they even get to meet up with their friends (who go to public school) and attend field trips with the schools! Yes they have availabilities where home schooled children can join so long as I offer to help chaperon and pay the normal fee to attend. NOT only do they have that option for field trips, but many home school moms get together and plan trips as well online! I have not done the meet ups online yet with other mothers but there are many support groups in each state who have this amazing service. So if you ever hear my kids don’t get out THEY DO! I’m able to take them on nature walks and fishing trips to learn about aquatics and mammals we encounter on our trips.
Why I do NOT have my kids attend public school:
I have nothing against public schools since I grew up attending them, but I did make a choice when I was 15 years old and had my first son (yes I was very young I’m currently 22 years old now) to home school my children if I was able to. In the end everything worked out and I’m a stay at home mom with 3 beautiful home schooled children. I personally didn’t like how there was usually only 2 teachers to a classroom of 20 or so children. I remember being in class and raising my hand for days to be picked to answer a question or participate in activities but NEVER got picked. I felt so left out and bored of my situation, of course Recess takes away those thoughts but at the end of the day I found myself looking at the clock. Many schools have different methods of teaching where there are more then 2 teachers in each class, I for one have not seen them in my state unless it was a special needs class. I feel like my kids wont get the attention they need or the help they desperately need. Yes I see the benefits of being social in this environment, but my kids are very social-able where we live and have multiple friends and play with them daily or every other day at play dates. I’m always there watching the kids while they play and they are never out of my sight, so they do interact with one another on a very sociable level. Overall I find home schooling EASIER. more PRODUCTIVE and also more INTIMATE where as I’m not there at public school and can’t help or be there if they need me.
**My opinions should not be construed as telling moms what to do, but only to voice why I choose Home schooling, please do not take offense because I do not mean to offend anyone with my opionins. Kelsey is actually a teacher at her local school and we have had discussions about this topic occasionally and converse on the benefits and cons of each. Overall I suggest you do what you believe is best for your child and do not feel as though anyone is MAKING you choose one or the other.**
