Growing up I always thought relationships were a piece of cake. That it was just something that happened naturally and you didn’t have to put any work into it. Boy was I in for a shocker when I got older. Relationships are hard work. You have to put in a lot of effort to keep your relationship going strong.
I have been with my husband for 7 years and it has been a very bumpy ride. But we fought our way through the bumps and here we are stronger than ever.
Here are some tips that my husband and I have learned over the years that have helped our relationship stay strong. Not everything will work for every relationship but you can always take what will work and make it your own!
12 Tips for a Successful Relationship
1.) Communication is HUGE. Part of being in a healthy relationship is having good communication.
My husband and I communicate about everything and I mean everything. I believe that is what has made us as strong as we are today.
2,) Don’t fight about money. So many relationships end because of arguments over money. I can honestly say that we have never fought because of money. Fighting isn’t going to magically make more money appear. If you must have a talk about it, make it a calm conversation.
3.) Never go to bed angry. In the beginning of our relationship we would get in an arguement and just go to bed. Which then resulted in waking up the next day still angry with each other. Now, we never go to bed angry. If we are having an argument we will stay up until it is dealt with.
4.) Be Honest. Always. You should be able to be honest with one another about everything. The good and the bad. Never lie to one another. You will eventually be caught and it won’t be pretty.
5.) Pick your battles. Life is so much easier when you learn to pick your battles. I can honestly say that since my husband and I have figured this out we very rarely have an argument.
6.) Have date night. When you have kiddos it can be hard to really get to spend one on one time with your partner. Make sure to set aside a day at least once a month to go out. You don’t realize how much this can help a relationship until you start doing it. We have a 5 year old and it wasn’t until he was about 4 that we started doing date nights monthly. It has really helped strengthen out marriage.
7.) Intimacy is important. Trust me, I know that after a long day all you want is to go to bed. I’m right there with you. But intimacy is so important to keep your relationship healthy. I still struggle with this because I would much rather sleep once my head hits the pillow. But make time to be intimate with your partner.
8.) Have something you can do together. Even if it is just watch a show that you both like. I love to cuddle up with my husband after our son is in bed and catch up on our shows.
9.) Compliments. Even if you’ve been together for 50 years a compliment goes a long way. It shows your partner that you are still attracted to them. Which will make them feel good 🙂
10.) Trust. There has to be trust in your relationship or it will be very hard to make it work.
11.) Don’t bash your partner. The first thing you want to do when you are having a fight with your partner is to call/text your mom/sister and complain about them. I learned that isn’t always the best thing to do. Because once you two have made up your family may still have ill feelings toward your partner for whatever you had said to them. I never complain to my family about my husband. If I am unhappy about something I voice it to him.
12.) Say I Love You. When you wake up, when you get off the phone, when you get home from work and before you go to sleep. You can never say I Love You too often. In my home anyways!
I hope that you will find at least one tip in here that will help you have a strong and healthy relationship. It takes a lot of work to have a great relationship but it is worth every minute of it!
