It’s week 2 at Camp Warner Bros.! Welcome back to all who are following along as we go through 8 weeks of Virtual Summer Camp with Warner Bros. This week, we are having some fun with science, color mixing, learning patience, and making a delicious treat for our Steven Universe: The Movie camp viewing party. We made Crystal Gem Candy!
Steven Universe: The Movie is now available to own on Digital, Blu-ray & DVD
The girls and I had so much fun doing this Crystal Gem Activity together. I handled the stovetop part of the activity while the girls did everything else. The only mason jars I had on hand were the super-sized ones, so to make enough Crystal Gem solution I quadrupled the recipe.
At first, it may not seem like there will be enough for your jar, however, once you combine the sugar and water together and let those two cook for a minute. The solution more than doubles in size and can fill a medium-sized mason jar easily.
While the directions call for “food coloring” which we assumed meant the liquid drops, we only had gel food coloring on hand. We had no issues with our gel food coloring, minus the fact that our purple became very dark and hard to see through. I would suggest if you are planning to make a purple jar and are using gel food coloring, to make sure you go slow with the colors.
CAUTION: This activity requires adult supervision at all times. Please use caution when pouring hot liquid.
The Science Behind The Fun:
As time passes (and the solution cools), the water will slowly evaporate from the solution. As the water evaporates, the solution will become more saturated with sugar. The sugar molecules will collect on the string, and the candy crystals will grow molecule by molecule!
Extra Science Fun:
Try making two jars of candy. In the first jar – seed your “Crystal Gem” Candy by rolling your string in water and sugar. In the second jar do not seed your string with sugar before growing. Determine if using seed sugar crystals changes the growth rate of your “Crystal Gem” Candy!
About Steven Universe: The Movie:
After so many harrowing adventures, Steven and the Gems are ready to celebrate how far they’ve come with a movie musical! Little do they know they’re about to face their worst enemy yet.
Crystal Gem Candy
It’s crazy how fast these Crystal Gem Candies grow! In just a few short hours we began to see the crystals forming on the string and around the jar. The pictures below show what the gems look like after growing for 24 hours in a dark cabinet. After day 3 we had enough on our strings to enjoy while watching Steven Universe: The Movie.
Don’t forget to let the Crystal Gem’s dry before you start snacking on them! Not only does it help the candy solidify and become even yummier, but it also helps prevent unwanted sticky messes. How do I know you ask, well Esuun could probably tell you why.
Don’t forget to check back each week as we adventure through 8 weeks of Camp Warner Bros. Don’t miss a beat of all the fun by using the #CampWarnerBros on social media to see what we are up to.
