WHAT IS TECH TIMEOUT?
The Tech TimeoutTM challenge started by ForestersTM encourages families to take a daily break from technology. Participating families are encouraged to disconnect from all things electronic with the goal of helping spouses, parents and children build stronger bonds, communicate more personally and get more involved in each other’s lives.
Why We Took The Foresters Tech Timeout Challenge
Have you ever talked to someone but just knew everything you said wasn’t 100% getting through to your kids? Yeah I now moms that’s just about every day lol. But what if you could make a difference in this area just by powering down not just the children’s devices but YOUR devices. I took this challenge to basically reset and connect with my family. As a blogger I am about 85% of the time working on my laptop. If I’m not working on the laptop I am chasing around my 1 year old and 5 year old.
I am starting this week of Tech Timeout to bring my family closer, since I have purchase them their tablets and game systems I have noticed a decline in actual physical interaction. My hope is we can use this timeout to balance out their technology use and actual human interaction with one another. I also hope that they all begin to build again their

The first day was a real struggle for the kids, but mostly for myself. I found myself looking for my phone after only 10 minutes of our hour challenge. It was always bothering me who may have texted me or what I may be missing on instagram. The kids didn’t have as much of a hard time as I thought they would have. Although it did bother them that they couldn’t atleast watch a movie to help pass the time. The constant “I’m Bored” phrase was said many times, but decreased as the days went by.
– Start with a plan, plan to host some board games, or activities BEFORE you dive into the 1 hour.
– Put all electronics in a safe place and up somewhere no one can touch them during the 1 hour time frame.
– Put all phones on silent.
– Notify those who may try to reach you during the hour that you will be unavailable unless its an emergency.
– Be open to new games that don’t involve a keyboard or buttons.
– Enjoy this time, it goes by faster than you think.
– Grab your favorite snack to help pass the time.
Take the “Foresters Tech Timeout Challenge” and pledge to go tech-free for an hour a day with their family – especially as the holidays near. Let us know how your timeout challenge went and any tips for other families.
