Disney Channel’s newest series Big City Greens is that Saturday Morning cartoon feeling we have all be craving for. While in LA for the #Incredibles2Event we had the opportunity to visit the Disney Television Animation Building to screen Big City Greens.
Big City Greens premieres June 18 at 9:30 a.m. on Disney Channel, DisneyNOW, and Disney Channel VOD
This actually wasn’t my first time visiting the Disney Television Animation Building, the last time I was here I screened the Big Hero 6 Series. Every visit to this building is just as magical as the last visit. There are so many fun photo opportunities to take advantage of there.
It’s hard to fathom how any work can get done in such a fun location, nonetheless so many amazing shows come out of these buildings. Just like their newest show Big City Greens!
Before and after we screened the first two episodes of this fun new show, we had the opportunity to sit and speak with the creators. The show was actually created by two brothers Shane and Chris Houghton who greeted us with a fun slideshow.
Story Idea Origin
This wasn’t your ordinary slideshow either, it was full of fun family photos from when Shane and Chris Houghton were younger, as well as some backstory to where many of their ideas for the show came from. The storyline for the series is based on real-life experiences these two witty brothers had as children growing up in a farm town in Michigan.
“We wanted to show all different types of families because the greens are so kind of fish out of the water in this new place. Everything is different but we kind of wanted to normalize that everybody is on a path that they are on and everything is a little different, and everything has its own little flavor. We wanted to shake that up a little bit.
With bill moving in with his mom we wanted to show a different kind of family. We didn’t want to make this a squeaky clean wish fulfillment kind of show we wanted a family to reflect the families we knew growing up.” – Shane and Chris Houghton
As the brothers put it, they were allowed to mow the law and a very young age. I definitely as a mother had to shake my head and laugh at these two photos when put side by side. I love how many of the scenes, locations, and stories come from their childhood photos and real-life experiences.
They grew up with many animals on their property including their lovable cat named Lucy. She lived for 21 years and was the sweetest and most lovable cat. Some of their childhood memories are featured in this series as well as friends, neighbors and family members who all rolled together became the show Big City Greens.
Fun Fact: The Brother’s childhood Garage is featured in Big City Greens!
What Big City Greens Is About
The story Big City Greens follows the offbeat adventures of 10-year-old Cricket Green, a mischievous and optimistic country boy who moves to the big city with his wildly out of place family – older sister Tilly, dad Bill and Gramma Alice. Cricket’s curiosity and enthusiasm lead his family on epic journeys and into the hearts of his new neighbors.
Cricket’s character is actually based on Chris one of the brother creators of this show. Chris voices Cricket Green which is perfect since the character was based on himself as a child.
Fun Fact: Chris himself created the look of the show.
The Green’s Family
Cricket Green who is the main character who is kind of a scampy little boy who is very curious. His curiosity is always getting him into trouble and discovering new things which usually gets himself in trouble.
“If there is a door that says do not enter that is the first place he is going to go to” – Shane Houghton
Cricket’s sister Tilly is his slightly older sister who is a little odd but very sweet, she definitely marches to the beat of her own drum and has a lot of strong opinions that she will politely and calmly tell you all of them. She is confidently quiet and gets into just as much trouble as Cricket does and often go on a lot of adventures with Cricket.
Grandma Alice who is described as sweet and sour, she loves her grandkids and her son but she is feisty and won’t let anyone get away with anything.
Grandma Alice was based on our real life grandma who was so feisty and sweet who had that super hard exterior but was so gooey inside. -Shane Houghton
Bill Green is a single father who is a bit overwhelmed. This character was based one when Shane and Chris were growing up they knew farmers who were worrying about their farm their crops and weather. All things that were out of their control and there was this overwhelmed personality with Bill but he is doing his best.
Remmy who is Crickets new Best friend who he meets when he moves to Big City Greens. Remmy is kind of everything that Cricket is not, he is a from a wealthy family who lives in the who is sheltered. Remmy has a schedule where Cricket his best friend has never heard of a schedule before.
Spilling the Beans on Future Celebrity Guests
Although they couldn’t say much they did spill the beans on who to expect in some future episodes of Big City Greens. They name dropped Jon Hamm who will be playing (A Manager), Danny Trejo, Raven-Symoné who will be playing (A Reporter), and Busta Rhymes who oddly enough is voicing over a wise fish. With 20 episodes to look forward to in this season you can bet your marbles it will be a fun ride.
Each episode is eleven minutes long leaving each block segment on Disney Channel a two-episode extravaganza. Big City Greens premieres June 18 at 9:30 a.m. on Disney Channel, DisneyNOW, and Disney Channel VOD.
